From Pastor Phil…
Dear Friends;
In last month's article, I started writing about what was coming down the line as our church is now an Academy Church for New Ministry development. I discussed a survey this church has taken, that measured eight essential characteristics of any effective church. All effective churches are healthy in each of these eight areas. Any church that is not healthy in each of these areas is not as healthy as it could be, for the sake of Jesus Christ. The Good News is ... there are always God-given ways of improving our effectiveness in each of the eight characteristics.
What are these characteristics of which I speak? They are:
Empowering Leadership, Gift-based Ministry, Life-Giving Spirituality, Effective Structures, Inspiring Worship Services, Holistic Small Groups, Need-Oriented Evangelism, and Loving Relationships.
The survey measured the congregation's response to questions designed to discover who we are, as a Church. We are strongest in Empowering Leadership and in Effective Structures. We are weakest in Life-Giving Spirituality and in Holistic Small Groups. Again, every church, without exception, needs to be growing in strength in each of these eight characteristics in order to be what God has formed us to be. And that includes us.
I want to stress that we are growing well in these areas. Since 2006, we have gone from 36 to 56, out of a scale of 100, in our effectiveness. We are now above average among all the churches of the world.
I also want to stress that we have a ways to go - God is never through with us and is always calling us forward. You will be hearing about these things in worship, in the Messenger, on the website, and in the bulletin. What we ask is that you prayerfully consider how you can be a part of what is going on.
This is not something that is designed to over-burden saints that are already burdened. It is designed to get us to think, live, and act in creative ways that remove barriers to our effectiveness, and live the way God calls all congregations to live in the face of 21st Century realities.
Please pray for the people involved in this work, come to church when you're in town, and be Well.
With Prayers,
Phil Webb
July Greetings!!
I am always so excited for July! I love the evenings spent at the pool watching Wesley become comfortable in the water, the way his face looks right before he jumps in, and the fit he throws when we say that it is time to go home. I love watching Grace becoming more daring as she learns how to walk, how she crawls through the pool and puts her face straight in, and how she is teaching her brother that SHE is in charge….not him. I just love summers!!
What are your favorite parts of summer? Is it the birds singing at 6:00 a.m. as you have your first cup of coffee? What about the satisfaction you feel as you look at your lawn or your garden? What ever it may be, take time this summer to be immersed in God’s amazing gifts that we have been given. Be immersed in the beauty, the silence, and the smells of God’s Glory! Here these words as we give thanks to God for the summer we have been given!
On your feet now—applaud God ! Bring a gift of laughter,
sing yourselves into his presence.
3 Know this: God is God, and God, God .
He made us; we didn't make him.
We're his people, his well-tended sheep.
4 Enter with the password: "Thank you!"
Make yourselves at home, talking praise.
Thank him. Worship him.
5 For God is sheer beauty,
all-generous in love,
loyal always and ever.

For your information -
10 Quick Facts for Walkers
1. Researchers have concluded that people who burn at least 2,000 calories in conscious activity a week (climbing stairs, walking and formal exercise) show vastly better health profiles and longevity than sedentary people.
2. 10,000 steps of walking burns roughly 300 to 450 calories each day. This means a person who averages 10,000 steps a day will, over the course of a week, end up burning 2,100 to 3,100 calories walking.
3. Most adults walk between 1,800 steps and 2,200 steps per mile (depending on stride length). Most children cover a mile in about 2,500 steps because their strides are shorter. So, 10,000 steps translates to about five miles a day for an adult, four miles a day for a child.
4. The average office worker takes about 3,000 to 5,000 steps in a typical workday. People who are sedentary may get only 1,000 steps in a day.
5. The average person needs to walk an additional 30 minutes daily in order to reach the 10,000-step level.
6. To get the most health benefit from walking, walk regularly. You should walk for at least 20 minutes three times a week to see any health benefit.
7. A person who wants to lose weight should walk at 3.5 to 4.5 miles per hour every day for a minimum of 30 minutes. Those who want cardiovascular fitness should aim for 4 to 5 miles per hour or faster.
8. Walking helps prevent heart disease and stroke by improving cholesterol levels, blood flow and heart function. It also helps reduce blood pressure and prevent adult-onset diabetes by reducing body fat.
9. Walking prevents bone loss and osteoporosis by promoting bone formation.
10. Need any other reasons to walk 10,000 steps daily? Log on to the website at www.digiwalker.com for more information on the DIGI-WALK 10,000 Steps Today?™ program.
Enjoy the remainder of your summer! Be safe and use sunscreen.
Blessings!

Additional Nurse’s Notes –
Annual Conference in Des Moines was an uplifting and inspiring session. I thank God and the congregation for the opportunity to attend.
This year’s theme was “Radical Hospitality Offering God’s Love”. There were challenges from Bishop Trimble to act out this theme in our lives and congregations – so watch for suggestions, ideas and opportunities, to make and adopt the challenge.
I am sharing some quotes from presentations at Conference that were particularly meaningful to me.
“Encourage one another”
“Walk together to serve your communities”
“Faith in Christ is a gift from God, because Christ is a gift!”
“Action begins in your heart, home, church, and community”
“We are given the gift of life and faith with an invitation to serve”

Looking Ahead ... Farm Progress Show Food Tent
August 31, September 1, and September 2 (Tues - Thurs).
The Administrative Board has approved our congregation's involvement in the 2010 Farm Progress Show, which will be at the same place it was in 2008. HOWEVER, THERE ARE POSITIVE CHANGES! A different company will be in charge of the catering, so it will be a much better situation for our volunteers. We will not be staffing grills, but will be in the tent and in the money counting office. More details to come. When you see the sign-up sheet at Church, SIGN UP! It will be a great time of fellowship!
Caring Host Families Urgently Needed!
We are a small non-profit, foreign-exchange student organization looking for caring host families in your community, and we need your help! Out of 71 students, we still have 58 students from South Korea, Germany and France waiting for their match with a volunteer host family. These students need to have a host family and a host school by August 31st to be able to come. Finding host families is becoming more difficult every summer and we need your support to find placements for our students. I do believe that American families benefit as much from the experience than the foreign students they sponsor. In the past, churches have been very helpful in assisting us in finding host families. We would appreciate it if you could print the following announcement in your church bulletin or newsletter as soon as you are able and for as many Sundays as possible. Most of these students come from Christian homes, and I am sure their parents would appreciate the opportunity for their children to practice their religion while they are in this country.
OPEN YOUR HEART AND HOME
to an exchange student from Germany, France or South Korea
for the coming 2010/2011 school year.
Caring host families or single parents (with or without children) are urgently needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home for one or two semesters starting in late August. EMF students have medical insurance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family’s daily life including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America. Their stay here is sponsored and supervised by EMF (Educational Merit Foundation), a non-profit, educational exchange program. Interested host families are encouraged to apply and select a student as soon as possible. For more information on EMF students, please contact Marie-Claude Dijoud now at 1-800-467-8363 or visit our web site at www.emfusa.org
I would be happy to email you mini-profiles of available students in .pdf format. Thank you very much for your help! These students are anxious to learn that a home has been found for them. Your contribution to this cause is most appreciated... Please help us make these student's dream a reality!
Sincerely,
Marie-Claude Dijoud

United Methodist Women Special Membership Recognition For 2010
Each year with all of your help We The Boone First United Methodist Women select three Outstanding persons to receive a SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP. This year we have AGAIN Selected THREE WONDERFUL GALS. By doing so a contribution to The National United Methodist Women’s Mission Fund is given in their names and the Recipients receive a SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP PIN.
This year our 3 special ladies have many things in common and many things that are different. All 3 have been members of the United Methodist Church for a long time but not always at Boone First.
All 3 were born in different parts of Iowa namely Cedar Rapids, Ogden and here in Boone.
One had 2 brothers, one had 2 brothers and 2 sisters, and one was an only child.
Two grew up in and around Boone. One grew up in Ogden.
One attended a country school, Lowell School and graduated from Boone High School. One attended Boone Grade schools and graduated from Boone High School. One went all through the Grade School in Ogden and graduated from Ogden High School.
One attended Iowa State College. Then went to live with an Aunt in San Francisco and attended Munson Business School there. The other two graduated from U.O.J.T. (for those who aren’t familiar with this it’s The University of On Job Training) or to U.H.K. (The University of Hard Knocks) and ALL graduated with honors!!
One met her husband to be while she worked as a book keeper at Ross’ Car Dealership & Garage and he worked in his father’s grocery store nearby.
One met her husband to be when she was 13 years old. He was a friend of her brother.
One met her husband to be through mutual friends here in Boone. All these wonderful guys were Boone fellas.
One of these gals was married in the Methodist Church in Ogden with a reception at the church. One was married in the Central Christian Church here in Boone. One was married in a Lutheran Church in Jefferson, Iowa.
All three of these gals have lived in this great city of Boone most of their married lives and one has lived in her home for 52 years.
They all have been members of First United Methodist for a long time.
One of our ladies has two daughters and one son. She has one grandson and six granddaughters and five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Her son is the Mayor of Kelly, one daughter is an important part of the ISU Foundation and one daughter lives in Rochester, MN.
One has two daughters and has two grandsons and three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson. One daughter literally runs the Boone News-Republican and the other knows all the ins and outs of the family business.
One has one son and one daughter and has four grandsons and two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
All these God’s children are loved dearly and these great gals would do anything for them AND THEY DO.
These ladies have all worked during their lives at many different things besides their full time job of taking care of their children and homes. One worked at the Mondt Coffee Shop until starting a family. Then worked with her husband in the family business. One worked in a store in San Francisco, was a Receptionist for Dr. Kane, and also as a Secretary for years at Hallet’s Construction Company. One worked in Ross’ Car Dealership & Garage as a book keeper and retired from the City Water Department at the Boone City Hall.
These Gals have many interests – One Knits Hats for our UMW projects, enjoys gardening, reading, playing Bridge, attending Lowell Club, using the computer and is adept in paying all the bills on line and most importantly is the family care giver.
One enjoys reading, gardening, cooking, traveling, playing cards and helping out any of her large extended family. and can you believe this of this little gal she has liked flying and riding a motorcycle! She is also seen in church serving Communion. This gal works every day too.
One likes to travel and has spent many winters at South Padre Island in Texas. She is still Secretary Treasurer for a P.O.W. Chapter that she and her husband belonged to as he was a World War 2 Prisoner. She is also Chaplain of the State Chapter. She is active on the Resident Advocate Committee at the Easter Star Home.
These ladies have been seen helping at weddings, bazaars, funeral lunches, church services, rummage sales, are on many committees in the church and are faithful members of this church and our UMW – you name it they have done it.
All these gals have been very special moms – just ask any one of their families.
All three are wonderful ladies, have great smiles, great laughs and spread the joy of living in the lord wherever they go. if you haven’t guessed by now who our special membership recipients are for the year 2010.
